Numbers tells the tragic story of how an entire generation missed God’s promises. Israel’s best leaders were chosen to explore the land that God had pledged to His people. These could not have been novices; they must have been mature and experienced men. I would imagine that Moses picked them for their bravery and spirituality.
Twelve men went to the Promised Land to get a feel for the terrain so that they could help plan the conquest. Instead of focusing on the mission and the size of their God, ten of these leaders compared themselves with the local people. They felt inadequate and told their countrymen that they could not conquer Canaan. The Israelites believed these ten leaders and sealed their fate in the desert.
Numbers 13:31-33 says, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.’ And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, ‘…all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. There we saw the giants …and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.’”
One Thing People Do When They Feel Small
The ten presumed that the men that saw were better warriors. They looked at Their opponents and assumed they were stronger and smarter. That’s one thing we always do when we feel small. We look at others and assume they are better.
The devil wants you to listen to his lies. He wants you to doubt yourself and feel discouraged. He wants to squash your confidence. The men of Israel probably went out full of faith. But once they focused on other people, and saw themselves as small, courage evaporated and fear took hold.
Maybe you were planning to apply for a job but when you heard about the other candidates, you doubted yourself and withdrew your application. Perhaps you were in a wonderful relationship but worried that you weren’t good enough. You built walls to avoid being hurt and ended up sabotaging your own happiness.
But What Does God Say?
Where others have doubted you, your Heavenly Father has faith in you. When you put your trust in Him, He will not allow you to be put to shame. He will protect you. Joshua 1:5 (MSG) says, “I’ll be with you. I won’t give up on you; I won’t leave you.” You have the Lord Of All on your side!
Take your eyes off your circumstances or shortcomings and instead focus on the greatness of our God. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. If you lack confidence, God wants to build you up so you can fulfil your purpose.

Números 13:31-33 dice: “No podemos subir contra ese pueblo, porque es más fuerte que nosotros”. Y dieron a los hijos de Israel un mal informe de la tierra que habían reconocido, diciendo: “…todo el pueblo que vimos en ella son hombres de gran estatura. Allí vimos gigantes… y éramos como langostas a nuestro parecer, y así nos veían a ellos.”
Una Cosa Que la Gente Hace Cuando se Siente Pequeña
Los diez supusieron que los hombres que vieron eran mejores guerreros. Miraron a sus oponentes y asumieron que eran más fuertes e inteligentes. Eso es algo que siempre hacemos cuando nos sentimos pequeños. Miramos a los demás y asumimos que son mejores.
El diablo quiere que escuches sus mentiras. Quiere que dudes de ti mismo y te sientas desanimado. Quiere aplastar tu confianza. Los hombres de Israel probablemente salieron llenos de fe. Pero una vez que se enfocaron en otras personas y se vieron pequeños, el coraje se evaporó y el miedo se apoderó de ellos.
Quizás estabas pensando en postularte a un trabajo, pero cuando escuchaste acerca de los otros candidatos, dudaste de ti mismo y retiraste tu solicitud. Quizás estabas en una relación maravillosa, pero te preocupaba no ser lo suficientemente bueno. Construiste muros para evitar ser herido y terminaste saboteando tu propia felicidad.
Pero, ¿Qué Dice Dios?
Donde otros han dudado de ti, tu Padre Celestial tiene fe en ti. Cuando pones tu confianza en Él, Él no permitirá que seas avergonzado. Él te protegerá. Josué 1:5 (MSG) dice: “Estaré contigo. No te abandonaré; no te dejaré”. ¡Tienes al Señor de todo de tu lado!
Quita tu mirada de tus circunstancias o defectos y, en cambio, concéntrate en la grandeza de nuestro Dios. Puedes hacer todas las cosas a través de Cristo que te fortalece. Si te falta confianza, Dios quiere edificarte para que puedas cumplir tu propósito.
