One of the most powerful prayers you can pray | La oración más poderosa que puedas hacer

When God stops what He is doing to tell us a story, we need to take note. Well, in the middle of a long list of genealogies, the Lord paused to describe a special man.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 reads, “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called on the God of Israel saying:

“Oh that You would bless me indeed & enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.”

Born In Pain

Jabez was born in pain, in fact his name means ‘he causes sorrow’. At a time in history when everyone knew the meaning of their names, Jabez had the stigma of a label that must have been very off putting to potential friends.

Maybe you were born into pain. Perhaps you have gone through seasons of unrelenting pressure. There are 2 traits that set Jabez apart, even though the odds were against him. We can learn from his example.

1.   Mindset

Despite great difficulty, Jabez prayed like victor, not a victim! He didn’t tell the Lord how hard his life had been. He didn’t talk about all the obstacles he had to overcome, he prayed with faith and determination:

He said, “Oh that You would bless me indeed & enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me…” (1 Chron 4:10). It’s like he made a choice, and you and I can make that same decision.

Say with me right now, “I won’t allow my upbringing to define me. I won’t allow my circumstances to control me. Despite tragedy and trauma, I still expect the best – because God is good and I am His child. I am not a victim!”

2.   Motives

Jabez’s prayer didn’t stop there. He continued, “… that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” Some translations say: “that I may not be pained” but the word he used means ‘to pain’.

Jabez was saying: It Stops With Me. He did not want anyone else to be hurt as a result of his life. He desired to be a blessing to others, to carry goodness wherever he went. God answered his prayer and called him honorable.

A Powerful Prayer

Years ago, I asked the Lord to transform me into the woman my husband deserved. Hidden issues that had dogged me for years caused me to hurt the one person who had really showed me unconditional love.

I now realize that I was asking the Lord to do for me what He did for Jabez. God heard that prayer and started a deep work in my heart and life. God instructs us to prioritize our hearts because our hearts determine how we live.

One of the most powerful prayers we can pray is: “Lord transform me to such an extent that I don’t hurt anyone.” If we get healed of the buried pain that make us prickly, and become more like Him, our worlds will be better places.
