Despite being chosen by God for a great task, King Saul struggled with insecurities throughout his reign. I believe it was these unresolved insecurities that led to Saul’s downfall. Let me explain.
Saul must have loved God, or else the Lord would not have picked him as king. We also know that he had a good heart. 1 Samuel 9:2 says, ‘…his name [is] Saul, a choice youth and goodly, and there is not a man among the sons of Israel goodlier than he…” (YLT – the most literal translation available).
God chose Saul so he had the skills and anointing. He must have loved God, and he started out with a good heart. Saul has what it would take to be a great king of Israel. He could have reigned well.
I Feel Unqualified
However, Saul didn’t feel qualified to be king (1 Sam 9:21), and he hid on the day of his coronation (1 Sam 10:21-22). Instead of bringing every sense of inadequacy to the Lord. He reached out for human approval to fill the void.
I can relate to Saul! For years, I fed on the praises of people and constantly sought reassurance from those I admired. I worried what others thought of me and needed to be noticed. I sought approval and affirmation. It was exhausting.
Saul’s story is told so that we can tell a different story. Let’s look at Saul’s insecurities to help us identify any in our own lives. As we look at his, check your heart. Once we know what we are dealing with, we can journey to freedom.
5 Signs King Saul Felt Insecure
1. Inadequacy – He felt inadequate when God called him.
2. Avoiding the spotlight – He hid from the limelight at his coronation.
3. Feeling threatened – He felt small when the people celebrated David.
4. Approval – He needed his leader to approve of him.
5. Praise – The praises of people made him feel good.
Yes, God chooses the foolish things of this world, but after He chooses us, He wants us to seek healing and wholeness so that we can be used by Him to confound the wise.
If only Saul had learned to do what David did. If only Saul had gone into God’s presence and shared his pain, I believe the Lord would have healed his heart and made him secure. If Saul had become whole, he could have finished well.
If you struggle with any insecurities, please don’t ignore them or think it’s just the way you are. The same God who healed my heart and brought me on a journey to security can do the same for you.

¡Puedo identificarme con Saúl! Durante años, me alimenté de los elogios de la gente y constantemente busqué consuelo en aquellos a quienes admiraba. Me preocupaba lo que los demás pensaran de mí y necesitaba llamar la atención. Busqué aprobación y afirmación. Era agotador.
La historia de Saúl se cuenta para que podamos nosotros contar una historia diferente. Miremos las inseguridades de Saúl para ayudarnos a identificar alguna en nuestras propias vidas. Mientras miramos el suyo, revise su corazón. Una vez que sepamos a qué nos enfrentamos, podremos ir hacia la libertad.
5 Señales de Que el Rey Saúl se Sentía Inseguro
1. Insuficiencia – Se sintió inadecuado cuando Dios lo llamó.
2. Evitar los Focos – Se escondió de los focos en su coronación.
3. Sentirse Amenazado – Se sintió pequeño cuando el pueblo celebró a David.
4. Aprobación – Necesitaba que su líder lo aprobara.
5. Alabanzas – Los elogios de la gente lo hacían sentir bien.
Sí, Dios elige las cosas necias de este mundo, pero después de elegirnos a nosotros, quiere que busquemos sanidad y plenitud para que Él pueda usarnos para confundir a los sabios.
Si tan solo Saúl hubiera aprendido a hacer lo que hizo David. Si tan solo Saúl hubiera ido a la presencia de Dios y compartido su dolor, creo que el Señor habría sanado su corazón y lo habría hecho sentir seguro. Si Saúl se hubiera recuperado, podría haber terminado bien.
