What was it that caused Joseph to be promoted from prison to Prime Minister in just one day? After 13 years of hatred, rejection, betrayal and cruelty, how was it possible that Joseph was able to rise so high?
You probably know the story of Joseph’s suffering, slavery and imprisonment, then the suddenly that led him to be second in command in Egypt. But let’s look at the time that he was first reunited with the men who tried to destroy him.
The Reunion
“But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke through an interpreter. And he turned himself away and wept.” Genesis 42:23-24.
When Joseph saw his brothers again, he did not show even a hint of animosity. He did not parade his superiority. He did not revel in their despair. He cried.
With kindness, Joseph revealed himself to his brothers: “Please come near to me.” He was tender and his words sought to relieve their guilt and to reassure them. “Do not be grieved or angry with yourselves,” he said in Genesis 45:5.
He hugged them. He was overflowing with tender love: “Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.” Genesis 45:14. There is no evidence of any resentment.
Brutal Betrayal
Think about it for a while. Joseph spent 13 years of his life in captivity – first as a slave and then a prisoner. The Bible describes the cruel conditions Joseph endured in jail. “They hurt his feet with fetters, he was laid in irons” (Ps 105:18).
He suffered because his brothers hated him. And yet when we met them again, Joseph was full of love and had their best interests at heart. Even while Joseph tested his brothers to check that they had changed, he was planning their future.
Joseph arranged for his brothers to live in the best land in Egypt, he found work for them and gave them a vehicle. They walked to Egypt, but rode back in a chariot! He treated them with love and consideration.
How Did He Do That?
How was it possible for Joseph to be so tender towards the men who tried to ruin his life? There is only one possible explanation. His heart had been completely healed of every hurt.
The one thing you need to know about Joseph is that he prioritised the restoration of his soul. As a result, he was free to fulfill his purpose. What was his destiny? It was to bring salvation to the men who tried to destroy him.
We can forgive someone, but if we are still wounded, we will be careful to keep them at arm’s length. It is almost impossible to open our hearts towards people who have betrayed us unless all the pain has been taken away.
The Key To Futures
Joseph prioritised the restoration of his soul and as a result, God knew he was ready for his destiny. In one day, he was promoted from prisoner to Prime Minister. He was now positioned to bring salvation to the nation of Israel.
Now here is the thing. We all get wounded on our journey through life. We go through betrayals and let downs. We get rejected and humiliated. Things can be said that pierce and things may be done that crush.
But what do you do when you’re hurt? If you will do what Joseph did, you will set yourself up for your greatest days. Don’t neglect your soul, don’t bury pain when you get rejected. José priorizó la restauración de su alma y como resultado, Dios supo que José estaba listo para su destino. En un día, fue ascendido de prisionero a Primer Ministro. Ya entonces estaba posicionado para traer salvación a la nación de Israel.
Ahora aquí está la cosa. Todos somos heridos a través de nuestro camino por la vida. Pasamos por traiciones y decepciones. Somos rechazados y humillados. Cosas pueden ser dichas que nos hieren y cosas pueden ser hechas que nos aplasten.
¿Pero, qué hace usted cuando está herido? Si hace lo que hizo José, se preparará para sus mejores días. No descuide su alma, no entierre el dolor cuando lo rechacen. Priorize su alma por el bien de su destino.
